Representing Sala Beckett

Representing Renovation/Reuse/Time SPRING 2022 - RYAN ROARK
Team: Thomas Bordeaux, Mary Hestad & Anna Wiles

This project is an exploration of how to represent the passage of time in a building’s history. My team chose Sala Beckett by Flores & Prats Architects, which is a theater and dramaturgy school in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelone. The building originated as the social club Pau i Justícia over one hundred years ago and has undergone multiple renovations and programs through the decades. When Flores & Prats renovated the building in the mid 2010s, they did a wonderful job of preserving the building’s character. The architects dove deep into the history of the space and chose to keep many materials from the original building, but move their locations to meet the theater company’s needs. This renovation was much like a set change during a show, so our team decided to represent it as such. Our model shows a slice of Sala Beckett as a set, with the pieces that changed location as moveable parts. The drawings show the theater’s past and present, marked with red tape.
